SEO Checklist for Blog Posts & Web Pages

26 items to review before you hit publish. Covers structure, keywords, metadata, images, and internal linking.

How to Use This SEO Checklist

This checklist is designed to run through before you publish any page or blog post. It covers the on-page SEO fundamentals that help search engines understand what your content is about and decide where to rank it.

You don't need to obsess over every item for every post, but running through this list catches the easy wins that often get missed in the rush to publish. Things like forgetting alt text, leaving a default URL slug, or skipping internal links can quietly hurt your visibility over time.

Work through each section below, or read the detailed guide for explanations of why each item matters and how to do it well.

1

Page Structure

  • Page has exactly one H1 tag
  • H1 clearly describes what the page is about
  • Headings follow logical hierarchy (H1 → H2 → H3)
  • Headings aren't used just to make text bigger (use bold instead)
2

Keyword Targeting

  • Primary keyword identified for this page
  • Primary keyword appears in H1
  • Primary keyword appears naturally in first 100 words
  • Related terms and synonyms used throughout content

  • Title tag includes primary keyword near the beginning
  • Title tag is compelling and click-worthy
  • Meta description is 150-160 characters
  • Meta description includes a clear value proposition or call to action
Use a character counter to check your title and meta description length.
4

URL Slug

  • URL slug is short and descriptive
  • URL slug includes primary keyword
  • URL uses hyphens between words (not underscores)
  • URL is lowercase with no special characters
5

Images

  • All images have descriptive alt text
  • Alt text describes what's in the image (not keyword stuffing)
  • Image file names are descriptive
  • Images saved in web-friendly format (WebP, JPEG, or PNG)
  • Images are compressed before uploading
Squoosh (by Google) handles both compression and WebP conversion.
6

Internal Linking

  • Page links to at least 2-3 related pages on your site
  • Anchor text is descriptive (not "click here")
  • Older relevant posts updated to link to this new page
7

Before Publishing

  • Page previewed on mobile
  • All links tested and working
  • Proofread for typos and errors
Step away for a few minutes, then review with fresh eyes.
